Sharon Oatman

Obituary of Sharon L. Oatman

Adams - Sharon L. Oatman, of 14 Liberty Street, died on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at her home, surrounded by family.  She was diagnosed with brain tumors this past summer.  Known affectionately as "Ma" to individuals closest to her, she was able to spend the last two months of her life surrounded by the comforts of her residence, through the guidance of Hospice of Jefferson County.

Ma was born on Aug. 25, 1940 to H. George and Frances (Barrett) Smith, and graduated from Adams High School in 1958.

Ma married Robert V. Oatman on Dec. 5, 1959. Together, they had three children: Wanda R. Oatman and Robert D. Oatman, both of Watertown, and Sherri A. Oatman Worden Smith, who died in 2004.

Other survivors include Ma's sister, Sandra Youngs, Henderson, six grandchildren: William Oatman, Adams; Chasity Worden, Rodman; Brandi Kimmett, Watertown; Jordan Worden, Steamboat Springs, Colo.; Brandon Thompson, Adams; and Preston Oatman, Watertown. Ma also leaves behind eight great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents and two brothers, Johnny and Randy Smith, both of Adams.

Ma worked for several years at Gables Adult Home in Adams.

More than anything, she enjoyed taking care of her family, whether it be cooking elaborate meals, providing a helping hand when needed or simply listening to problems. In the Oatman household, she was the ultimate caretaker.

Ma loved Elvis Presley, Arby's roast beef, jigsaw puzzles, board games and swearing.

Per her request, Ma's body was cremated, and there will be no services.  Arrangements are with the Piddock Funeral Home, Inc., Adams.

She asked that donations be made to Alcoholics Anonymous, which accepts contributions only from A.A. members. The family wishes that any other donations made in her memory go to any organizations that help to fight addiction.
