Obituary of Glenn R. Smith

Glenn R. Smith, 81, formerly of the Zoar Road, Burrville, died Saturday July 30, 2016 at the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility in Lowville. Funeral service will be 1:00 pm Wednesday at the Piddock Funeral Home, Adams. Burial will follow in the Brookside Cemetery, Watertown. There are no calling hours. Born March 17, 1935 in Watertown, son of Lyle and Ellen (Grothier) Smith, he graduated from Adams Center High School. He worked on the family farm on the Zoar Road in the Town of Watertown. He married Patricia A. Parks of Adams Center on April 12, 1958 at the Emmanuel Congregational Church in Watertown with Rev. John C. Wentzel and Rev. Graham R. Hodges officiating. The couple operated the farm until retiring in 2001. Pat died April 21, 2003. He is survived by a son, Matthew Smith, Watertown and his beloved Jodi Steele; two daughters and son -in-law, Jennifer and Gene Loonan Castorland NY, Marcy Teal, Glenfield; his grandchildren Emily and Levi Worden, Nathaniel and Megan Gould, Jacob and Bryan Smith, Lucas and Anna Teal; great grandchildren Cayden and Abigail Worden ; one sister Mary Ellen (Clinton) Throop, Mission Veijo, CA; a brother in law David Thompson; sisters in law Barbara (David) Crandall and Carol Schnell; and nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by a daughter Sara Elizabeth, a sister Janice Thompson, a niece Kathy Barrett and his brother in law Richard Schnell. Glenn was an avid cattle judge. He started this passion through 4-H dairy judging team. He represented New York on the national level and was selected for his outstanding work in county-wide, regional and state 4-H dairy judging. Glenn was president of the Board of Directors of Rutland Hills Dairy Cooperative, Inc., a member of the Jefferson County Farm Bureau, and active in the Cooperative Extension Association of Jefferson County. He was awarded Agricultural Extension Service Forage King in 1961 and 1963. He and his wife were also presented with honors, Distinguished Service to Agriculture by Jefferson County Farm Bureau in 1990. Glenn was known for his kind, pure heart, his business sense and work ethic. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. The family has requested that donations be made to the Lowville Academy Central School Booster Club or the South Jefferson Central School Varsity Club, in care of the Athletic Department.
