Alvin F. Roe Jr. (81 years old) passed away on Friday, June 20, 2025 at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, NY after suffering from a hemorrhagic stroke 9 days prior.
Alvin was born in Syracuse, NY on September 16, 1943 to Alvin F. Roe and Stephanie (McCarthy) Roe. He spent many of his years growing up on a farm. At 16 he took a live-in farming job with Bernard and Marion Coleman. They were good to him and became surrogate grandparents to his children. Sometime later he took another farming job with Jim and Pat Worden who, also, became lifetime family friends. Along the way he drove milk trucks, worked at Great Lakes Cheese and operated a wrecker. Eventually he went to work as a Machinist for the New York Air Brake, leaving there at about 40 due to a back injury. During the remainder of his life he was self-employed and was well known in the community as an excellent landlord. He was never afraid to work hard and at some points in his life would work 70-80 hours per week.
That’s what he did, but not who he was. He was a father who loved and provided for his children. He worked hard his whole life because he wanted to leave them something. He was a doting grandfather who built an entire campground at the old Lisk Bridge just to provide a safe, loving, fun environment for his grandkids to spend their summers. His family meant the world to him! But he didn’t stop with family, he was a great human who helped many people in need through the years.
In Alvin’s early 40’s, he took up hunting and it became his passion. He loved spending time in the woods, with nature and with his friends at his hunting camp. He also enjoyed fishing on his boat with his sons-in-law.
Alvin married his first love, Maryanne Wilson and together they had 3 children: Alvin (Roe), Marion (Duff) and Penny (Luiz). Later he married the love of his life, Mel (Melody) McConnell. Together, they raised a son, LeRoy (Barkley).
In addition to his children, Alvin is also survived by 6 half-sisters - Sherry, Nancy, Judy, Linda, Barb and Patti; 11 grandchildren – Justin, Jordan, Corey, Alvin, Janelle, Dillon, Sarah, JaQuann, Jatasia, Shooter & Cordelia; and a slew of great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins and other loved ones.
During his final years, after losing Mel, he reunited with his first love Maryanne.
For many years in his later life, Alvin struggled with Alzheimer’s disease. His loved ones are comforted with the knowledge that he is at peace now.
