Jerome C. O’Brien, 76, Adams Center, the man, the myth, the legend — there will never be another “Pop.”
While Jerry’s time here on Earth may have felt short, his life from start to finish was one most people could only dream of. He took full advantage of the “luck” that ran through his Irish blood and lived life to the fullest, leaving many in awe that he was still around to tell his stories.
Jerry was born on August 27, 1949, in St. Paul, Minnesota, to Jerome and Joan O’Brien. As a child, his family relocated to Union Beach, New Jersey, where his inner entrepreneur blossomed. He graduated from Key Port Highschool, studied at Cook College and after several career changes, Jerry got his first taste for pest control. In the mid 70’s, he began his first business that he was immensely proud of, Watergate Pest Control, “Where we get the bugs out!”
At nearly forty years old and avoiding tax collectors, he was ready for a fresh start. He closed his eyes, placed his finger on a map, and made his way to Hammond, NY. Jerry would tell you that this is when his life truly began. While exploring the area and developing a love and appreciation for the outdoors and fishing, he came across the perfect waterfront home on Butterfield Lake in Redwood, NY. He offered full asking price the very day he saw it, and started to plant his roots.
Being charismatic and generous, Jerry was quick to make friends so, it wasn’t long before his path crossed Tammi’s. At first sight, a connection developed and he knew she was the one. Twenty years his junior, some thought they were crazy — but their love was strong and true. They knew that together, they could build a life they both always dreamed of. Jerry always lived life in the fast lane, and Tammi was happy to co-pilot. They were married on New Year’s Eve in 1990, beginning thirty-five years of devotion, loyalty, growth, and an immense amount of fun. He will be deeply missed by his beloved wife, business partner and best friend.
Together, Jerry and Tammi built what is now the most successful family-run pest control business in Upstate New York, All Pest. Though proud of its success, Jerry remained humble, always crediting Tammi, Danielle, and the All Pest team. His generosity was well known—so much so that “Jerry clients” became office slang for those who received reduced or free services simply because they held a special place in his heart. His honest and caring spirit will forever live on at All Pest.
Above all else, Jerry loved and was most proud of his daughters, Allison (Brian) O’Malley and Danielle O’Brien, and their children. His eyes would light up — sometimes with tears — at the mere sight of them. He spoke often of his love for them and how proud he was of all their achievements. Even in his final days, he asked if there was anything he could do for them and reminded them how deeply he loved them. He was a devoted and extraordinary father and grandfather, not only to his own family, but to the many other kids that walked through his door.
In 2007, Jerry and Tammi built his dream home on several acres of land—a place he was immensely proud of. He was happiest there, perched at the head of the counter with a glass of chardonnay, the fireplace glowing, and a “dynamite tune” playing on the radio. It was there that his devoted family ensured his journey on Earth ended peacefully, surrounded by the extraordinary love he worked so carefully to create.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Tammi O’Brien; his sister Kathy (Steve) Wilson; brothers Patrick (Mary) O’Brien, Daniel (Marcine Edgar) O’Brien, Raymond (Ellen) Aldrich II; his daughters Allison (Brian) O’Malley, Danielle O’Brien; several grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and so many others that he loved just like family.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to South Jefferson Rescue Squad or Hospice of Jefferson County.
