Joseph Caggiano

Obituary of Joseph A. Caggiano

Joseph A. ‘Pop’ Caggiano, 93, died peacefully at home in Port Ontario on April 6, 2023, with his family at his side and very briefly had been under the care of Hospice of Jefferson County. There are no services. Arrangements are with the Piddock Funeral Home Inc, Adams, NY. Born July 29, 1929 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of Anthony and Josephine (Tacoma) Caggiano. He met the love of his life Margaret Reld as a teenager. They married seven years later, spending seventy years as inseparable partners. After graduating high school and technical school, Joe enlisted in the US Army and was stationed in Germany. Upon his return home, he apprenticed and became a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union. His work took him to Syracuse where he worked on the roofs of many of the buildings in Central NY including Syracuse University and the Veterans Administration. Joe and Marge purchased a home in Chittenango and opened JOMAR Radio and TV. He had many of the car dealerships as his customers. They soon had two children, Bill and Barbara, who they raised in Chittenango. Their much loved camp in Port Ontario gave them enjoyment and many happy memories. They were fortunate to purchase the waterfront property along the Salmon River and spent their summers there. After they closed their business in 1980, they moved to New Port Richey, FL. Joe went back to work in the building trade for Daly Aluminum. His only condition of employment was to have summers off so they could return to Port Ontario. They would bring their grandson Greg with them and many summers their three grandsons Bobby, Michael and Greg would join them. Pop would spend many hours with the boys fishing and swimming. He spent many more hours working around the property building things for the boys and fixing boats and motors. Bobby purchased an adjacent property, where he lived full time, which made it possible for Joe and Marge to continue to spend summers in Port Ontario into their 80’ and 90’s. After the death of his beloved wife Marge on January 31, 2022, Joe came back to Port Ontario to stay permanently. He moved in with his grandson Bobby where he remained until he passed. He is survived by his son William (Gail) Caggiano; his grandsons Robert D’Argenio, Michael (Mary) D’Argenio and Greg Caggiano; daughter in law Cindy Caggiano and son in law Emilio (Gigi) D’Argenio. Besides his wife Marge, he is predeceased by a daughter Barbara Brown. Joe was a life long member of the Lions Club and served many positions on the local and regional levels. He was past president of the Chittenango, NY and Cotee River, New Port Richey, FL, Lions Clubs. Donations in his memory may be made to a Lions Club of your choice.
