Obituary of Walter J. Tyo

Walter J. Tyo, 82, lifelong resident of Rodman, died Saturday morning February 17, 2024 at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, NY surrounded by his family.  A graveside service will be held in the spring in the Fairview Cemetery, Rodman, NY.  There are no calling hours.   Arrangements are with the Piddock Funeral Home Inc, Adams, NY. Born April 13, 1941, son of George G. and Eleanor J. (Hill) Tyo, he graduated from Adams High School in 1959.  He entered the US Army after graduation where he served for the national guard. Following his discharge in 1962 he worked part time on the Tyo family farm, along with the Heath Cheese Factory in Tylerville and the Burrville Cider Mill, where he met his beloved wife Thelma M. Clement. The couple married on August 28, 1965 at the Holy Family Church Watertown, NY and still reside in Rodman, NY.  After returning to his family dairy farm in Rodman, he purchased the farm from his father in 1965, retiring in 2000.  He then worked part time for the town of Rodman Highway Dept. from 2001-2003. He also work at McIntosh farm and Porterdale farm, both in Rodman, until 2018.  In 2004, the couple purchased a home in Leesburg, FL, where they spent their winters. He is survived by his wife Thelma, three sons, Todd Tyo, Gainesville, NY, Mark Tyo and Kevin (Christy) Tyo, both of Rodman; five grandchildren Cody (Heather) Tyo, Melinda (Brandon) Seaman, Bobbie Jo Tyo, Aden Tyo, Adelaide Tyo; two great grandsons Ryder Tyo, Kane Tyo; two brothers Alan Tyo, Donald Tyo; and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by one brother Bernard Tyo and two sisters Doris Hasler and Pauline Needham. Walt was a member of Saint Cecilia’s Church, Adams, NY and the Knights of Columbus. His greatest joy was spending time with Thelma his boys, and especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. In his spare time you would find him riding his side by side through the woods and to his camp in Lorraine, NY.  Donations in his memory may be made to Fairview Cemetery, 22391 Williams Road, Rodman, NY 13682.
