Obituary of Viola B. Newton
ADAMS, N.Y. — Viola B. Newton, 90, longtime resident of Adams died Sunday morning, April 26, at the Samaritan Keep Home, Watertown, NY, where she had resided since August 2014.
Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, at Piddock Funeral Home, Adams. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 29, at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Adams. Burial will be at a later date.
Born May 22, 1924, in Ellisburg, a daughter of Glenn and Bertha Symes Brown, she graduated in 1942 from Adams Center High School.
She married Lewis M. Newton on Oct. 17, 1942. The couple lived in Adams Center for a short time, and moved to Adams in 1946. Mrs. Newton worked for the former Grand Union, Adams, and for several years at the former Crescent Corset Co., Adams.
She was a member and former President of the Adams Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, and a member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church.
Vi enjoyed sewing, and along with her sisters Marilyn and Marjory, known as “Grams 3”, made doll clothes.
Mrs. Newton is survived by a son and daughter in law Ronald O. and Judy Newton, Adams, a daughter and son in law Nancy N. and Thomas Widell, Mexico, three grandsons, three step grandsons,four great grandchildren, three step great grandchildren, three brothers, David Brown, New Bern, NC., Chester Brown, Adams, Paul Brown, Carthage, four sisters, Eba Harding, NC., Marjory Hough, Adams, Bertha Murray, MI., and Marilyn Hosley, Ithaca, and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Lewis, who died October 9, 2011, one sister June Cushing, and four brothers Howard Brown, Henry Brown, Robert Brown,and Richard Brown.
Donations can be made to the Emmanuel Episcopal Church and the South Jefferson Rescue Squad.
