*Some of the following facts may not be facts, but understand I am sharing memories about a larger than life figure that you can only
decide what is true from your experience with him.
People around the world argue the greatest athlete, mind, food and vacation spot on a regular basis, however there is no discussion about the "Greatest Hugger in the World". *The Oxford English Dictionary wanted to have 2 definitions for a "hug", The "Uncle Tom/Thomas Conley Hug" and the "hug" everyone else gave. When *Mother Nature was ready for us to experience Spring, she would ask Tom to hug the sun to give it a kick start and next thing you now it was summer. If you showed up to any gathering before Uncle Tom showed up, it was a moment you never forgot. The room would pause as if savoring the breath and the many would smile in anticipation of when Uncle Tom (my version of John Wayne and Bob Hope) would make you feel that you were the only person in the world. His deep voice saying "Matthew" then the tightest, lifting you off the ground and most loving "Uncle Tom/Thomas Conley" hug removed all the sadness in the world. You could follow his path by the loved ones attempting to catch their breath in his wake! We would sit and listen to him tell stories with passion and laughter, just hoping he would tell another. Those moments were always second to his love of Phyliss, Lana, Joshu and Jake. He was integrity and unwavering from his core values. He was a gift.
To our friends and family who shared a breath, a hug and laughter that made you forget about anything bad in your life, I challenge you to hug someone with the love and passion that Uncle Tom hugged us all with. There may be an increase in chiropractic visits, but I know that the world became a better place because of every hug he gave.
My name is Matthew Robert Thomas Drake, son of David Drake and Jane Conley Drake and I am a hugger too.
