Obituary of J. Lee Flynn

J. Lee Flynn, 76, of Adams, died Sunday morning at the Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown. His funeral service will be 10:00 am Thursday at the Adams Village Baptist Church, with Rev. Thomas Tharp, Pastor officiating. Burial will follow at 3:00pm in the Cedar River Cemetery, in Indian Lake, NY. Calling hours will be 3:00-5:00 and 7:00-9:00 pm Wednesday at the church. Arrangements are with the Piddock Funeral Home, Adams. Born December 13, 1937 in Long Lake, son of James A. and Evangeline Flynn (Glynn), he graduated from Indian Lake Central School and Ithaca College with a Bachelors in Music Education and a Masters in vocal music. He married Barbara Hall of Indian Lake on June 10, 1956 at the First Baptist Church, Indian Lake. They lived in Ithaca, Bainbridge, and Old Forge, before settling in Adams. Lee taught vocal music for 23 years in Bainbridge, Old Forge and the Watertown schools. He retired from teaching in 1982 and began his theatrical career culminating on Broadway in the show “State Fair”. The impact of J. Lee’s talent, time, and dedication is felt today on stages and in classrooms across the country. He is survived by his wife Barbara, one son Shawn Flynn, Indian Lake, three daughters, Dawn Backus, Weybridge, VT, Dian and husband Jeff Roberts, Adams, Dedra Flynn, Weybridge, VT; four grandchildren, four great grandchildren; four sisters, Merilyn Schrader, Johnson City, Mary (James) Slocum, Troy, Cathy (Daniel) Brennan, Castleton, Eileen (Richard) Gear, Phoenix, AZ; and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents and his brother, Michael Glynn. Lee was a member and past choir director of the Adams Village Baptist Church. He was very involved with the restoration of the church organ. He was also a member of the Screen Actors Guild, Actors Equity, and MENC.
